2008 Scott Spino Sponsorship Raffle Letter
Lincoln School 22 was the home of Scott Spino, a beloved teacher who lost his life to a drunk driver in 2004. The Foundation was established by Scott's parents, Geri and Jerry, with the goal of continuing Scott's passion in making a difference in our community and in the lives of our children. This year the Foundation's goal is BIGGER. The Foundations' 2006 goal is to again “clothe” the children at School 22 as well as extend that giving of warmth and lots of smiles, to the children at another city school --The Eugenio Maria De Hostas Charter School. The children at the Charter school will receive their warm winter gear, including new coats, hats, gloves, scarves, books and smiles on November 17, 2006 at 1:00 pm. The children at School 22 will receive their hats, gloves, scarves, books, pencils and a motivational bookmark on December 13, 2006 between noon and 1:00 pm. The School 22 Literacy volunteers will distribute these items to their reading partner.
The “Keeping Kids Warm” project in 2005 was made possible by private and local donations of individuals who were moved enough to give back to our community by providing some happiness and joy in the lives of these children, through their generosity. For more information about the Scott Spino Foundation and this year's event, please contact Geri or Jerry Spino at 227-4069.
We have a two-pronged approach: Every month, a volunteer brings a book and reads 1-on-1 with the child for 30 minutes. Our first year, we set a goal of 100 adults to meet 1-on-1 with 2 nd graders. We exceeded this expectation with well over 200 volunteers, and were able to extend the program to 3 rd graders. After the first year, the children showed improvements in their comprehensive skills, recognition of words, and the fun of reading. For the 2006-2007 school year, we expanded the Literacy program to include 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd graders. Once a month, a guest reader reads a book to the entire group of 1 st , 2 nd , or 3rd graders. The Foundation provides each child with a copy of the book which allows them to read along. Please contact me if you would like to witness the twinkle in a child's eye as they discover the joy of reading, the thrill/excitement of knowing someone cares and they matter. Help us to enhance the lives of the children by becoming a volunteer. Your assistance will help us carry on Scott's dreams and his vision to enhance the lives of the children in our community.
On October 31, 2004 , in one brief tragic horrific moment a reckless drunk driver who was a repeat offender took Scott's life. The driver of the car was 23, had two prior DWI convictions. He had no license, yet still chose to drive, while intoxicated. He has pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree vehicular manslaughter, two counts of driving without a license and two counts of driving under the influence.
Scott's contribution to those whose lives he touched were visibly recognized through the course of his funeral. There were thousands that attended and many more that shared their grief with cards, notes, flowers, donations, hugs & tears. The media surrounding this tragic event was quite impressive. For one young man to make such a difference in the lives of others is truly a statement of how he lived his life. Many of us will never achieve that level of impact to others that he did in such a short time. Scott Lived A Life That Mattered.
Our goal is to continue Scott's dream/passion to make a difference in our community & the lives of our children through education, coaching/mentoring. To help us achieve this goal we have established the Scott Spino Foundation, Inc. All proceeds received from our fundraisers as well as donations will be placed in the fund for distribution to the community.
The Mission of the Scott Spino Foundation is to focus on supporting programs that provide education coaching and mentoring to children within our community investing in today's youth enhancing tomorrow's future.
In our hearts, Scott will always be a cherished son, a brother, a grandson, a friend, a teacher, a mentor and a coach.
